Vestmannaeyjar is an archipelago just south of Iceland, (see here), it was named after the Irish slaves that were killed there about 1200 years ago by Vikings.
I took the extended exposure above, (turning all the waves into ghosts of themselves), on a volcanic beach that had all kinds of machinery melted into the rocks. Below is a motor and transmission that, I'm guessing, is all that's left of a vehicle that was caught in the lava flow from the volcanic eruption in 1973.
The main island, Heimaey, is a 40 minute ferry ride from Iceland. During the trip you can see a couple of the other islands and the hunting lodges built on them.
